Yukio Nakagawa

1918 Born in Marugame, Kagawa Prefecture
1941 Returned to his hometown after becoming ill and learned ikebana from his aunt, Hisa Sumi, who succeeded his grandfather, Takasaburo Sumi, who was the head of the Sanuki Branch of Ikenobo.
1946 Studied Rikka under Shuntei Goto, the Ikenobo professor general in Kyoto.
1949 First solo exhibition in Marugame, Japan; his work was recognized by garden designer Mirei Shigemori and published in Ikebana Geijutsu
1950 Joined the Shigemori-sponsored ikebana innovation group “Hakutosha,” where he met photographer Ken Domon and learned the art of photography.
1951: Left Ikenobo and began activities as an individual ikebana artist
1955 Self-published his first collection “Yukio Nakagawa Collection” (500 copies). Around this time, visited printmaker Shiko Munakata in Tokyo.
1960 Sofu Teshigahara praised Nakagawa’s ikebana in the newspaper serial “Exploring the Avant-garde.
1968 First solo exhibition in Tokyo
1969 Exhibited “Hanabozu” in the exhibition “Ceramics by Sango Uno, Flowers by Yukio Nakagawa
1977 Second collection “Hana: The Works of Yukio Nakagawa” published. Included “Kyoka Shikansho” written by Shuzo Takiguchi.
1984 “Karaku: Yukio Nakagawa Exhibition” A memorial booklet was produced immediately after the death of Utako Handa.
1988 “UCHIMIZU” was performed at Miwa Kyusetsu’s tea ceremony room.
1989 Third collection “Yukio Nakagawa’s Flowers” published. Ikebana Diary: Showa Ikebana Warring States History” (author: Satoru Hayasaka)
1991 Produced “Uninterrupted Rest” dedicated as a tribute to Shuzo Takiguchi. First collaboration with Butoh dancer Kazuo Ohno on Nippon Television’s “The World of Beauty
1994 Serialized “Ono no Ki” for one year in Asahi Weekly
1997 Collaborated with Nobuyoshi Araki for the exhibition “Flower Whore Sakura
1998 Exhibited in “etre nature” at Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain, Paris, France
1999 Awarded the Oribe Prize Grand Prix and the Marugame City Cultural Merit Award
2000 Exhibition “Yukio Nakagawa, Flower Offering Olive” in memory of Shuzo Takiguchi
2002 Pre-event of the 2nd Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennial, “Scattering Flowers in the Sky: Yukio Nakagawa’s ‘Kyohana’”.
2003 Published “The Devil’s Mountain: The Works of Yukio Nakagawa”, the fourth collection of Yukio Nakagawa’s works.
2004 Received the 20th Higashikawa Award, given to artists who have contributed to the culture of photography.
