UTSUWAIROIRO – diverse vessels September 25 (Thu) – October 18 (Sat), 2025
Rooted in Jōmon-period earthenware, Japanese vessel culture has evolved through the integration of continental techniques and the aesthetics of the tea ceremony. By the Edo period, kilns across the country were producing distinctive wares, and since modern times, new forms of expression have been explored on the boundary between craft and art.
This exhibition, diverse vessels, introduces the world of contemporary makers who inherit this history while creating works that emerge between tradition and innovation. From lacquer bowls and glass cups that enrich daily life, to objects that transcend the notion of “vessel” and are elevated into pure form, and tea bowls that reflect a profound spiritual universe within the palm of one’s hand—these works reveal the rich expressions embodied in Japanese vessels.
